Heat Exchanger Types and Selection Guide

Heat exchangers are mediums used to transmit heat from one place to another to regulate the temperature of a substance or a system. These exchangers precisely contain two particular types of fluids, both hot and cold. Thermally -operated plates usually detach these fluids lest the fluids are immovable. Moreover, the two streams are connected in a manner that they can transfer thermal energy between them, both big and young heat exchangers. Automotive radiators, furnaces, boilers, heaters are just but a few examples of heat exchanger applications. So, what are the types of heat exchangers? Well, this post, we are going to have a look at the types of the exchangers and how to select them.

Types of the Exchangers

Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers- This type is broken down into the following types;

  • Double sectional baffles
  • Segmental or sectional baffles
  • Helical stumps or baffles
  • Rod stumps or baffles
  • Twisted tubing
  • Tube Augmentations or Enhancements
  • EM baffles
  • Low or depleted finned tubes
  • Twisted tapes

Solid type of Heat Exchangers – This type of exchangers contains the following types;

  • Plate and frame heat exchangers
  • Burnt plate and frame
  • Printed or produced circuits
  • Ventilated heat exchangers
  • Coiled heat exchangers

The above-mentioned are types of heat exchangers. Therefore, we are now going to take a look at how to select heat exchangers.

How to select Heat Exchangers

Therefore, experience also counts for an effective heat exchange process. In other words, you fully understand the reasons behind the success of Young heat exchanger.

Additionally, you should consider the following cost of the equipment when making your comparison.

  1. Installation cost
  2. Connection cost
  3. Maintenance cost
  4. Operating cost

It is imperative to understand the variety types of heat exchangers and their operational methods before making any selection. Therefore, we are going to look at the positives and negatives of the commonly used exchangers.

Projectile or Shell and Cylindrical Exchangers

  • It is the most commonly known and well understood type .
  • Very flexible in terms of delivering services
  • It can withstand more abuse because of its rugged mechanical construction nature.

  • It is not thermally efficient enough compared to other types of heat transmission equipment.
  • It has a low-induced vibration, which makes it vulnerable to equipment failure.
  • The stagnant zones, also known as dead zones that are found on the left side, can cause corrosions.

Compact Heat Exchangers

  • The initial purchase cost is a bit lower.
  • It has a wide variety of configurations, for example, welded, spiral and semi-welded.
  • The higher wall shear stress leads to high heat transfer and higher than shell and tube exchangers.
  • The connection requires a small footprint and has a lesser volume hold-up.

  • The narrow path makes it easy to plug or foul.
  • The thickness of the wall makes the selection of the construction material very critical.
  • Specialized opening and closing procedures are essential for the gasketed units.

Air-cooled heat exchangers

  • It is a better and attractive option for areas with less capability of heating cold water due to cost.
  • The operating cost and maintenance is low
  • It is ideal for cooling streams of high pressure.

  • The initial purchase cost is a bit higher.
  • The footprint it requires should be relatively large.
  • The process of temperature outlet is high.

Heat exchangers are very critical mediums in the process of transferring heat from one place to another. Therefore, it is crucial to select the best type to ensure effective productivity. Moreover, whether you choose an old or young heat exchanger, but when chosen wisely, can lead to better functionality. Those, as mentioned earlier, are just a few types of exchangers, and the advantages or positives and disadvantages can assist in choosing the correct heat exchanger.
